Weaning
Management Tips |
|
Weaning
can be a stressful event for calves, so taking proper
management steps to reduce stress can help make the
transition easier and reduce the chance of disease
taking hold.
-
Avoid
co-mingling or grouping calves until at least one
week after weaning.
-
Do
not wean calves until at least one week after any
vaccinations have been given.
-
Offer
the same feed during the weaning phase into the
post-weaning phase. As they make the
transition away from milk, keep the dry feed
portion of their diet consistent.
-
Try
to avoid stress during handling and/or moving
calves.
-
Minimize
environmental stress - keep them in a clean, dry,
draft free environment.
-
Keep
a close eye out for any signs of illness:
decreased appetite, droopy ears, head hanging
down, coughing, increased respiratory rate.
