The
recent diagnosis of a Minnesota herd infected with bovine
tuberculosis has brought this disease again to the
forefront. Bovine tuberculosis is a contagious,
infectious, and communicable disease affecting cattle,
bison, deer, elk, and humans. In both animals and people,
the disease can cause lesions of the lung and bone, weight
loss, and general debilitation. Bovine tuberculosis can be
fatal.
The disease
primarily affects the respiratory tract but can also spread
to other parts of the body. The primary route of
transmission is the exchange of respiratory secretions
between infected and uninfected animals. This can be
achieved through nose-to-nose contact or by the inhalation
of aerosol droplets that have been exhaled by an infected
animal. Animals may also become infected with M. bovis
by ingesting the bacteria. This could occur by ingesting
feeds that have been contaminated with M. bovis by
other infected animals.
There is no vaccine for bovine tuberculosis.
Control measures include quarantining a herd that has had an
infected animal and testing the herd for infection. If
the herd is discovered to have TB, the entire herd must be
depopulated. In the early 1900's, the federal
government instituted an eradication program for bovine TB.
This program includes testing of livestock on farms and
monitoring of animals sent to slaughter or trasported across
state lines. As a result of this program, bovine TB has
nearly been eradicated in cattle in the U.S.
