Guidelines for Purchasing Baby Calves

Whether you are purchasing calves from a farmer or through the sale barn, there are several signs you should watch for to ensure that you purchase the highest quality calves possible.

If you are purchasing calves directly from other farms, it could be beneficial to establish some guidelines ahead of time:

  • Agree on a price, usually based on current auction prices.

  • Specifiy that calves receive at least one gallon of colostrum within the first six (6) hours after birth, and be fed colostrum for the first three (3) days.

  • Agree that calves will be fed a high quality milk replacer and calf starter until the time of pick up.

  • Try to receive calves in groups rather than singly to minimize stress.

  • Agree on any vaccinations or treatments that need to be administered shortly after birth.

  • Calves should be housed in clean, dry, draft-free facilities.

If you are purchasing calves through the sale barn, it is important to remember that they are being exposed to a wide array of disease organisms, and that you may receive no history of the calf.  Some warning signs to watch for:

  • Nasal discharge

  • Swollen or wet umbilicus

  • Signs of scours on tail or hind legs

  • Dull or listless calves

  • Calves that appear to be less than 3 days old
