New
method of antibiotic treatment |
In an effort to
improve meat quality and reduce muscle damage from
injections, animal health companies are developing new
products with a different method of administration:
subcutaneous injections in the ear. Excede,
Pfizer’s new “time release” antibiotic, is
injected in the ear and provides seven days of
continuous treatment. Excede is labeled to be injected
subcutaneously into the calf’s ear. That means there
is zero pre-harvest withdrawal and it means there is
no tissue damage in marketable meat cuts.
As part of its new product release, Pfizer is hosting
workshops on ear injections. To receive instructions

The injections are made in the middle third of the
back of the ear. There is also a big, soft artery
running under the skin in that part of the ear, and
that is why Pfizer suggests producers use needles with
a 45° angle of cut. That provides a “duller”
needle that is less likely to penetrate the artery
wall if misdirected. (Shooting the medication into the
artery can cause serious reactions, the company says.)
So what you get when you inject Excede properly is a
bubble of time release protection that works almost
like an ear implant—its active ingredient absorbed
over a matter of days.
