Disease
Prevention |
| A healthy animal that is resistant
to disease and performs well in the feedlot is the
desire of every cattle producer. Realistically,
however, disease is a factor that can greatly effect
the performance and gains of cattle and can also cut
into profits through mortality and increased vet and
medical costs. The best method of treatment is
preventing disease from occurring.
The following management techniques can help to
prevent disease outbreaks in your herd:
- Feed high quality colostrum to newborn calves.
- Follow a recommended vaccination program.
- Follow a program for purchased cattle.
- Separate cattle by size.
- Provide the proper environment for maximum
growth.
- Provide plenty of fresh, clean water.
- Provide adequate nutrition.
- Break disease cycles.
