Preventing
Calf Scours |
According the the
USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS)
scours is the leading cause of death in young
(pre-weaned) calves, causing up to 61% of deaths.
Taking steps to prevent scours is a vital step in
improving calf survival rates.
- Colostrum, colostrum, colostrum. It cannot
be stressed enough the importance of calves
receiving at least 4 quarts of high quality
colostrum within 2 to 4 hours after birth.
- There are several products on the market to
vaccinate cows with before calving to boost
colostral immunity. If your herd is
experiencing a specific disease challenge (i.e. E.
coli, rota or corona virus, etc.) pre-calving
vaccinations may help improve colostral and calf
immunity.
- Provide a clean calving environment with fresh,
dry bedding.
- Dip umbilical cord in an iodine solution as soon
as possible to aid the cord in drying up and
prevent organisms from gaining entry into the
body.
- House the calf in a clean, dry, draft-free
environment.
If your calves do begin scouring, it is important
to keep them hydrated and provide an electrolyte
solution in addition to the appropriate treatment
method recommended by your veterinarian. |
