Managing Feedlot Stress in the Spring

Spring is finally here, bur unfortunately along with it comes feedlot stress.  With our years of experience in raising steers, we have recognized several ways that you can minimize stress factors by following a few management tips.

First and foremost, you must try to keep your steers dry and out of the mud.  We realize that this may be next to impossible, but every little effort helps.  Provide additional bedding and scrape cement portions a lot more frequently.  You should also make sure that you have feed and water located in an area that is easily accessible and dry.

Another tip is to avoid any other stress during this time such as vaccinations, implants, bedding changes, co-mingling cattle, or feeder style changes.  If you have made every effort to reduce stress and your herd is still having difficulty, you can feed an antibiotic for a short period of time as a preventative measure or, if necessary, as a treatment.

Tend-R-Leen currently offers two products that contain an antibiotic:

1.  Doboy 10 gm. Terramycin Pellets, code 396.

2.  Tend-R-Leen Beef AS700, code 566.

Follow the recommended feeding directions or ask your dealer/ANC for more information.  These products should not be fed in combination with Rumensin or any other antibiotics that are not approved by the FDA or your veterinarian.
