checklist - is your feedlot ready for winter? |
As the fieldwork comes to an end, we
start thinking about getting ready for the winter months
ahead. Winterizing buildings, checking waterers, and
preparing equipment for the colder months are at the top of
many producers' lists. But what about feedlots?
There are some steps to take to ensure that your feedlot
cattle are ready for the winter as well.
- Be up to date on all vaccinations. Fall is a
prime time for respiratory disease to occur.
Changing weather conditions along with possible new
incoming cattle create favorable conditions for
pneumonia, so make sure that all cattle are
appropriately vaccinated.
- Market any slow, "poor doer or lunger"
cattle. Any cattle that have exhibited signs of
chronic illness or poor performance should be marketed.
These are the first cattle that will come down with
pneumonia and have the poorest chance or recovering
while incurring considerable treatment costs.

Watch ALL
cattle closely for the first signs of illness
* Depressed appetite
* Slightly increased respiration
* Coughing
* Head held lower
* Hang back in corner of pen

Treat cattle
that exhibit these signs immediately. Often the
best results come when cattle are treated within 48
hours of disease onset.
