Converting Roughage Fed Cattle

With fall approaching, that means that there are a number of cattle that will be coming off pasture and into feedlots.  Cattle that have been fed a roughage diet can be converted to the Tend-R-Leen program, with some caution and care.

Conversion should not begin until the cattle have become adjusted to their new surroundings.  Below is a program to gradually convert cattle to the no-roughage ration:

Stage Roughage Corn/pellet mix
Stage 1 75% 25%
Stage 2 50% 50%
Stage 3 25% 75%
Stage 4 0% 100%
  • Each stage should last 4-7 days and should all be the same.
  • Roughage source can be hay, corn silage, or roughage source pellets.
  • This ration must be force-fed.
  • The corn/pellet mix should be set up for the target intake level upon program completion.
